Police still searching for gunmen who killed man over chain

HIALEAH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida family is seeking justice a month after their loved one was killed over a large gold chain.
The victim was visiting friends in Hialeah in October when he was shot and robbed. Now, his loved ones are asking the public to help catch his killers. "Think about it, it could be anybody in your family. If you've seen it or heard somebody saying something about it, please come forward," said the granddaughter of the victim, who wished to remain anonymous.
Police have yet to catch the killers who shot her grandfather, Antonio Tovar, for his gold Cuban link medallion. "I cannot sleep," the granddaughter said. "I think every hour, every second, at nighttime. I'm scared. I don't know if somebody is going to come for me, or I'm going to be robbed."
Tovar was shot dead at the Mango Hill development. Police said three men approached him with guns in hand, as he walked to his vehicle. "They demanded his chain, apparently he didn't give it up fast enough for their liking. They shoot him, take the chain off him and run off," explained Hialeah Police Detective Carl Zogby.
Zogby said the chain should be very recognizable. "It's a large gold chain with a Santa Barbara medallion right in the middle. It's very unique," he said.
The name "Tony" is engraved on the chain, which Tovar had for years. Tovar lived in New Jersey, but he was visiting family in Hialeah when he was murdered. "I know he was hard-headed. I believe he should have given it to the person, whoever did this, but it's...," said his granddaughter trailing off. "That was his life."
Zogby cautioned that these brazen robbers pose a great danger to the public. "They shoot him multiple times in front of several people, like I said, in a quiet residential townhouse neighborhood," he said. "This could happen to anybody on a Sunday night. That's why we urge anyone to call the Hialeah Police Department."
You can also call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
