Teenager gets probation for allegedly trying to kill friend's mom
NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (WSVN) -- A 13-year-old boy accused of trying to kill his friend's mother will not serve any jail time.
Friday morning, at the Miami-Dade Juvenile Justice, Marko Lazovic learned his punishment for his part in the alleged murder plot against Eliana Poveda. After cutting a plea deal with prosecutors by entering a no plea contest, Lazovic will have to serve six years of probation for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. During that period he will also have to undergo counseling twice a week.
Lazovic was placed on home schooling following his arrest, but now he will be allowed back to school. Still, there will be no early end to the probation period.
The attack on Poveda occurred in early September, outside of Poveda's ex-husband's home in Miami Beach. According to police, Poveda was dropping off her son, 15-year-old Erik Stone, when Lazovic attacked her with a steak knife, injuring her in the chin.
Police said Stone told Lazovic that if he could cut his mother's throat, he could join his club known as the Sons of Anarchy. The 13-year-old has been on house arrest ever since. Meanwhile, Stone remains in custody.
Brian Bieber, Lazovic's attorney, thinks the deal was very fair for his client's sake. "This is a classic case of a child's life being saved by the juvenile justice system," Bieber said. "What happened is the child was evaluated by four independent psychologists, all of whom determined he was not a danger to anyone."
Meanwhile, the mother at the center of this attack, has always said she did not want to see either of the teens serve any jail time. The decision will become official during a sentencing hearing in December. Neither she nor Lazovic said anything at Friday's hearing.
