Disgraced former attorney spends first full day behind bars

MIAMI (WSVN) -- The attorney for Scott Rothstein is speaking about his client after Rothstein spent his first full day behind bars.

"He's doing as well as could be expected," said Marc Nurik, Rothstein's attorney.

Rothstein stands accused of bilking investors out of more than a billion dollars in a Ponzi scheme out of his Fort Lauderdale law office. Nurik had to visit his client in the Federal Detention Center Wednesday afternoon after the disbarred Rothstein spent his first night behind bars.

Nurik said Rothstein is doing the best he can be doing, and he understands there is the possibility he will not see the light of day again since his client could face 100 years behind bars if found guilty. "He has no choice. He's been denied bond until we decide whether or not we're going ahead with a bond hearing. He's going to be sitting inside," Nurik said.

Tuesday, Rothstein was cuffed and brought into the federal building after the government spent months building a case against him. Nurik also made it clear that, contrary to other reports today, Rothstein is still not speaking directly with the government. "The only government he is speaking to inside are the people that are running the prison," Nurik said.

The prosecution believes others also participated in the scheme and expects to see more arrests made related to the case.
