MIAMI (AP) -- A grand jury has begun investigating what pushed Miami's major hospital system to the brink of financial collapse.

Jackson Health System is running out of cash, and has asked Miami-Dade County for an immediate $67 million loan to pay its bills.

A local unit of the hospital employee union Service Employees International asked prosecutors for an investigation into alleged financial mismanagement.

The prosecutor's office said the grand jury decided to investigate Wednesday after receiving the union letter.

Jackson Health System runs the city's only round-the-clock trauma center and is a safety net for the poor and uninsured.
