SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police arrested the second of two suspects accused of invading the home of an elderly couple, binding them up and attempting to rob their home.
According to police reports, the two subjects -- identified as Jorge Portales, 43 and Dorkis Gonzales, 46 -- targeted a home located at 5933 SW 152 Avenue where 82-year-old Maria Alonso and 75-year-old Juan Manuel Fernandez live. When the elderly woman answered the door Wednesday at 11:25 a.m. the two men forced their way inside.
Once inside, the suspects used duct tape to prevent the couple from escaping. However, Alonso managed to free herself and run outside where she found a young man and asked him for help. "She was tied up in the mouth. She was just like, 'Help me, help me.' I flagged somebody down and they called 911," said Enrique Lajues, who was walking home from school.
Police were notified and, when they reached the home, found Fernandez, who has Alzheimer's disease, bound up in a room on the second floor. Fortunately, the couple suffered no injuries.
After establishing a perimeter, Miami-Dade Police took one of the suspects into custody. The second of the two was found later, Wednesday evening, following investigative leads. Portales and Gonzales reported to afternoon bond court and did not receive bond.
Although the incident stunned some of the couple's neighbors, Malu Perez said someone broke into her home in the same area just two weeks ago.
