DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A school is trying to clean up a rodent infestation after a student at Western High School had to be treated after a mouse bit him on the finger.
According to school officials, the incident occurred Friday while the student tried to free a mouse from a mouse trap.
While the student is OK, school officials say this incident highlights a growing problem with mice at the school.
Students say they have spotted small mice around the school. "I saw one in my history class, and I've seen one in the culinary operations room," said John Moh.
The school's principal notified parents of the problem in two separate letters, informing them that the mice were not a danger to their children.
However, parents say the mice are intolerable. "It's really disgusting for the kids to have that at school," said Maria Nieves, a parent. "I'm really not comfortable with that. "The school's kitchen and cafeteria passed the school's last health inspection in February.
A pest control company has come out to the school nearly every day in hopes of solving the rodent problem, which officials said is the result of the construction of a new classroom building. "I agree the kids should not be going to school in a situation where there are mice or insects or other things like that," said Keith Bromery of Broward County Schools. "We've just had an unusual situation here with the construction."
Western High School hopes to solve the problem by the end of the summer.
