Father charged a year after daughter left in car, dies
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A man was charged Friday with the death of his 2-year-old daughter more than a year after leaving the girl in a car.
Dale Lopez, 24, of Lake Worth, was charged with aggravated manslaughter for the May 2006 death of Seanna Lopez.
Deputies presented their initial report to prosecutors in October, but authorities decided the case needed further investigation before bringing formal charges, said Mike Edmondson, spokesman for the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office.
"We actually requested a great deal of additional information" from the investigators, Edmondson told The Associated Press on Friday.
Lopez, 24, said he forgot to take Seanna out of the car when he returned home from running errands, according to sheriff officials. He found his daughter about an hour later on the floor of the car. Lopez told investigators that he got distracted with his other children.
The child was taken to JFK Medical Center in Atlantis where she was pronounced dead.
A judge ruled Friday that Lopez could leave Palm Beach County jail on supervised release since he had no prior criminal record.
His lawyer, Chris Haddad, told the Palm Beach Post that the case is "heartbreaking" for the family.
