Woman dies from burns suffered during house fire
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A South Florida woman has lost her life after suffering burns to over 90 percent of her body after her house caught fire and trapped her inside.
Miami Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of a house fire at 3142 Carter Street just after 9 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arriving, officials found Darlene Reath with third degree burns on 90 percent of her body. Paramedics transported Reath to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she died just after midnight Wednesday morning.
Reath's best friend who lived with her, heard her scream for help but was unable to help her in time. "That's my heart, man," said Emmanuel Alcindo choking through his tears. "I've known the lady for 17 years, man."
Neighbors heard the commotion and pulled her out of her burning home. "This person was brought out by neighbors that heard her scream for help," said Lieutenant Ignatius Carroll of Miami Fire Rescue. "She was transported to Ryder Trauma Center."
Reath's son is trying to stay strong with the loss of his mother. "I don't really know what to say when you lose a loved one this way," said Tyrone Reath. "I know everything is going to be all right. She is with God, so I'm accepting it how it is."
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
