FDA wants pharmacy to stop making animal drugs

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is seeking an injunction against a Florida pharmacy responsible for mixing supplements that killed 21 elite polo horses before a championship match last year.
The FDA said Monday it wants a federal judge to stop Franck's Compounding Lab in Ocala from making animal drugs.
Compounding is a process in which pharmacists mix drugs for specific patients, typically done when a patient is allergic to inactive ingredients in FDA-approved medicines or needs a different dose than what is commercially available.
In a complaint filed in federal court in Florida last week, the FDA accuses Franck's of illegally compounding animal drugs and creating products that are not safe. Franck's was not immediately prepared to comment Monday.
