South Florida girl receives threat on MySpace
DAVIE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A 15-year-old girl was unable to leave her house for several days after she received a threat on MySpace.
The girl, who wished to remain anonymous, felt as though her life was threatened when she found a letter in her MySpace account describing a violent plot against her. "Kidnap me, rape me, and that they didn't what they were thinking, and that they were probably going to slice my throat," explained the girl, describing the menacing message sent by her anonymous attacker.
"I don't know who he is, I don't who it is, I call it 'it,' because I don't know who it might be," said the girl.
The idea of becoming a victim has terrified the girl, especially since the threat was so detailed, even pointing out where she lives. "It's been scary, I've stayed inside the house the whole day, I haven't stepped outside the door," the girl said.
The girl's mother notified police, fearing that the e-mail was more than an empty threat. "Today it's my daughter, who is it going to be tomorrow, who's going to be the next one," said the girl's mother, who also wished to remain anonymous.
"We look into things like this, it's not something that we take on lightly, but in this case it's probably a childhood prank, but we will look into it," said Lieutenant Bill Coyne of the Davie Police Department.
Since police started investigating the matter, another e-mail from a different MySpace Web account was received by the girl, a day before the attack was supposed to happen. The letter appears to be from the same person, but with a different purpose, to say sorry.
"An apology is not going to take away two days of being horrified," said the girl.
MySpace has since pulled down the original user's page.
Police officers encourage parents to become concerned about situations like this. Check children's social networking accounts, look through e-mails and report any suspicious or inappropriate activity to police.
