Suspect dies, police officer grazed during shootout
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A suspect has died after a shootout with police near a South Florida high school.
The suspect died Wednesday afternoon after he was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound. A police officer was also grazed by a bullet after the shootout but did not suffer serious injuries, "Well, eventually police officers confronted him somewhere back there, and shots were fired. One police officer was hit in the arm. It's a minor wound. He's grazed," said Miami Police commander Delrish Moss.
According to Miami Police, a brief car chase ensued with the suspect after police said he was driving erratically and might have been involved in a robbery. Police said the suspect slammed his vehicle into another car, injuring the driver, and bailed out on foot. Officials had to place Miami Jackson Senior High School on lockdown, as the suspect fled just a few blocks away from the school near Northwest 17 Avenue and 35th Street.
Authorities said the suspect went from rooftop to rooftop trying to flee from police. Then, all of a sudden, police said shots were fired. Domingo Bermudez said he couldn't keep track of the number of shots fired. "Clack, clack, clack, clack," he sad. "We didn't hear how many, just shooting."
Paramedics transported the suspect as well as the innocent bystander to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where the suspect later died.
Authorities lifted the lockdown at Miami Jackson Senior High after the suspect was taken away.
