Grandmother arrested for buying drugs
MIAMI (WSVN) -- A judge gave a grandmother an earful after she was arrested for buying drugs off the streets of South Florida.
Miami Police arrested 70-year-old Paula Carrido for buying cocaine and marijuana during a narcotics sweep at Southwest Eighth Avenue and Seventh Street Wednesday. A detective recovered three plastic bags of pot and a bag of cocaine they said she was hiding in her bra.
A judge scolded Carrido during her bond hearing Thursday morning. "Don't you think [your children] would be embarrassed to see a 70-year-old who gets arrested on the streets at midnight for buying cocaine and marijuana?" said Judge Lawrence Schwartz of the Miami-Dade Circuit Court. "I don't want you to answer me, I'm just reading the police report."
Because she had a clean record, the judge released Carrido to await her arraignment on Sept. 10.
Once outside, she said the marijuana was not for her personal use but to help her son. "I'm getting marijuana because my son has pains from cancer," said Carrido. She also said her arrest would only happen in Miami. In other states, she said she would've been excused.
