Police search for missing corrections officer

WEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are searching the area of the Everglades Correctional Facility for a missing state corrections officer.

Miami-Dade police set up a command post nearby the facility late Friday morning to search for Jardiel Vasquez, 53, who was last seen leaving to walk his two dogs at 6:50 p.m. Thursday. The Florida officer was last seen in the area of 140 NW 41 Street.

At about noon, police said they discovered a body in the area but have not confirmed whether or not this is the body of Vasquez.

Police said they knew something was wrong when the officer left with his dogs but only his dogs came back, about an hour later. The officer is diabetic and needs his insulin.

According to the Department of Corrections, Vasquez is a security officer on the day shift at the South Florida Reception Center. He lives in staff housing on the grounds and was off duty when he went missing.
