Police arrest hit and run suspect who injured children

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police have arrested a man accused of a hit and run crash that injured two children riding on a bicycle.

Acting on an anonymous tip Tuesday afternoon, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives recovered the car owned by Raymond Curran, 25, in Lauderhill, which they believe struck the brother and sister in West Park Monday night.

Curran walked into a Hallandale Beach substation to talk to authorities. Police later charged him with leaving the scene of a crash and driving with a suspended license.

Officials located the suspect's vehicle hidden under a tarp in a Lauderhill apartment complex. "There's damage consistent with the damage that was left on the scene," said BSO Sgt. Alex Coto.

A neighbor's surveillance camera captured the suspected hit and run car fleeing the scene. On the surveillance footage, the car is missing a hubcap on the front left tire and the headlight is missing a lens. The car police confiscated had all its hubcaps missing.

On the night of the crash, Latauja Daniels, the mother of Javaun Calloway and his sister Darana'e Calloway plead for the public's help in finding the driver that sent her two kids to the hospital with head injuries. "Please turn yourself in. You do not know how much heartache and headache that this has caused them as well as me," she said.

Police believe Curran hit them while they were riding in the area of the 100 Block of Clifton Road Monday afternoon. "The 13-year-old female was driving the bicycle, her 10-year-old brother was on the handlebars when they attempted to cross the street, when they were struck by the hit and run driver," said Mike Jachles of the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Javaun and Darana'e continue to recover at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. "My son, his nose is broken, he's suffering head injuries, back injuries, neck injuries," Daniels said.
