Man who crashed into gas station speaks out
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida man who crashed his vehicle into a gas station is speaking out about the ordeal.
"I hit the blue car, went straight into the pump. My car was on fire, couldn't get the driver's side open, had to jump out the passenger side," said Roy Link, recalling the incident.
Link was driving his truck and somehow crashed into a Buick in the middle of Davie Road, sending him straight for the BP gas station. "He hit the gas pump. He hit (pump) number one and number two, I think that is. He ran straight into it. As soon as he hit it, it said 'bloom!' It was a big fire," said Sabrina Campbell, a witness at the scene.
Roy's truck also hit Winston Mottley who was pumping gas into his car. "This guy was pumping gas, and he was shot back I guess, and he was on the ground on fire," said Link.
Home video captured the blaze and fire crews extinguished the ferocious fire. "Imagine being faced with 40-foot high flames, with incredible heat, pulling off the hoses, deploying foam on the ground and then noticing that you also have people burning. It's challenging to say the least," said Division Chief Eric Pologruto of Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue.
In all, seven people were hurt. Mottley was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with severe burns. Crews transported another person to Broward General Hospital in critical condition. The others have since been released from the hospital.
Detectives are still not saying who is at fault for the accident.
