Fort Lauderdale's Air and Sea show's return planned for 2010
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A lost sponsorship resulted in the cancellation of Fort Lauderdale's Air and Sea Show this year, but a group of businessmen may be bringing it back.
Ever since last year's cancellation of the show, city officials have been defending themselves against the notion that the City cancelled the event. "Some people are under the mistaken idea that the city canceled the Air and Sea Show. We did not. It was the promoter that lost its major sponsor," said Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Cristine Teel.
When the original promoters lost their McDonald's sponsorship they were forced to cancel the annual show. Now, a group of businessmen want the air and sea extravaganza to soar once again. "We are not coming here asking for taxpayer money. We understand the budget just like you do. These are tough economic times," said Stan Smith.
One Fort Lauderdale resident was sad to see the show go and is hoping to see its return soon. "It's great for our city to represent the military, and I was really disappointed when we lost it, and I really think that the city should get behind this thing and get it going for 09," said Kevin Bolender.
City commissioners said 2009 is too soon. Instead talks are beginning for the comeback in 2010. "Let's start it off right and bring it back even better than it was in 2010," said Steven Savor.
