Stinging gas sends May Day protesters fleeing
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Stinging gas has sent May Day protesters fleeing a downtown Oakland intersection as police took at least four people into custody.
It was unclear whether police fired the gas Tuesday as several hundred protesters blocked traffic near Oakland City Hall.
Some protesters regrouped as police ordered the crowd onto the sidewalk. They were facing off with officers in riot gear.
The chaotic scene recalls several earlier clashes between Occupy protesters and Oakland police.
The protests are part of worldwide May Day demonstrations that have drawn tens of thousands of people into the streets from the Philippines to Spain. They demanded everything from wage increases to an end to austerity measures.
In the U.S., Occupy Wall Street members have joined the protests.
