BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) -- The Brighton state police post led the way in a recent effort to collect unwanted and expired prescription drugs.

People dropped off 85 pounds of prescriptions at the post in Livingston County. The Jackson post was next at 68 pounds, followed by Bay City at 62.

State police and federal drug enforcers on Sept. 29 invited people to bring prescriptions that were no longer needed. The statewide total was about 700 pounds. The Iron Mountain post was No. 1 in the Upper Peninsula with 60 pounds.

The drugs were destroyed.
