Man killed, officer hurt in Calif. police standoff

GERBER, Calif. (AP) -- A man suspected of shooting a California Highway Patrol officer during a standoff with police is dead.

Police say 60-year-old James Long was found dead of a gunshot wound Tuesday on the kitchen floor of the Northern California house where he had barricaded himself.

Authorities say Long had set up guns with stacks of loaded magazines at windows around the house.

They say the incident began when police received a call of a domestic disturbance from a woman in Gerber. The woman said Long got angry and began breaking things after learning she had unplugged the Internet.

Officer David Madrigal was shot in the knee as police responded to the call. He underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

Police are investigating whether Long was hit by an officer's bullet or shot himself.
