Teen killed by NYC police was shot 11 times
NEW YORK (AP) -- A medical examiner says a man killed by New York City police over the weekend had 11 bullet wounds to the back and both sides of his body.
Police say officers spotted 18-year-old Dashawn Vasconcellos with two others in a Queens park after hours. Police say Vasconcellos ran and eventually pointed a gun at officers. Chief NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne says officers ordered him to drop the gun but he didn't so they fired a total of 14 times. Authorities say Vasconcellos never fired his gun.
The medical examiner says five police bullets were recovered.
Fatal police-involved shootings have led to protests in New York City and prosecutions of police officers. Officers in two high profile shootings, that of Sean Bell, killed on his wedding day and Amadou Diallo, killed 10 years ago, were acquitted.
