California fairgoers injured when ride collapses

ANGELS CAMP, Calif. (AP) -- Emergency officials say a carnival ride has collapsed at a fairgrounds, injuring three people severely.

Dennis Townsend, a chief with the California state fire department, told The Associated Press that 14 other fairgoers suffered minor injuries after the swing ride collapsed shortly after 6 p.m. Friday.

He says the ride has arms that fling out as they spin around an axis.

Susan Leininger, a supervisor at Mark Twain Hospital in San Andreas, says the hospital has been told it will receive patients. It has not been told how many.

The fair, the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, hosts an annual frog jumping competition that draws thousands of entrants. The competition is scheduled for Sunday.
