TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- A 21-year-old college student from New Jersey who was dragged alongside a car during a purse-snatching in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe has died from her injuries.

Tempe police Sgt. Steven Carbajal said Thursday that Arizona State University student Kyleigh Sousa died Wednesday night at a local hospital.

Sousa was seen talking to a man in a car around 2 a.m. Wednesday when he grabbed her purse and sped away. Carbajal says Sousa became entangled in the handbag and was dragged about 20 feet before she came loose and hit the asphalt.

He says police are investigating the crime as a homicide and working to find the car's driver.

Sousa is from the Toms River area of New Jersey. She's listed on ASU's directory as a communications major.
