Boxer 'Baby Joe' Mesi loses bid for NY Senate
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Heavyweight boxer Joe Mesi has lost in his bid for election to the New York Senate.
The Democrat, once one of the world's top heavyweights, lost Tuesday to Republican Michael Razenhofer.
Mesi had the backing of the billionaire B. Thomas Golisano, the owner of the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres. But the Buffalo News endorsed his opponent, saying that although "Baby Joe" is instantly likable, he was out of his league at this point in his political career.
Mesi's 36-0 record is one of the world's longest active undefeated professional boxing records. He is a three-time New York State Golden Gloves champion and was an alternate on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team.
