Ex-NBA star Alonzo Mourning honored at Essence
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Former NBA player Alonzo Mourning, known for his superior moves under the basket, is also being recognized for his work off the court.
Mourning, who each year sponsors Zo's Summer Groove -- a charity weekend aimed at raising funds for youth and causes affecting them, was recognized by McDonald's for those efforts and others during last week's Essence Music Festival.
Now vice president of player development for the Miami Heat, Mourning was a recipient of the company's 365Black Award as was CNN journalist Soledad O'Brien, House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, D-S.C., and Frank E. Mason, a New York McDonald's owner/operator.
The award was launched in 2002 and recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in the areas of children's well-being, education and outreach in black communities.
