Hurricane warning issued for coast of Newfoundland

MIAMI (AP) -- A hurricane warning has been issued for the coast of Newfoundland in Canada as Hurricane Maria races northeastward in the Atlantic.
The warning covers the area from Arnolds Cove to Brigus South. Also a tropical storm warning is in effect early Friday for Newfoundland from Stones Cove to Arnolds Cove and from Brigus South to Charlottetown.
Maria's maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph (130 kph). But some weakening is expected by Friday night.
The storm is centered about 495 miles (800 kilometers) southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and is moving northeast near 45 mph (72 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Maria's center is expected to pass over or near southeastern Newfoundland on Friday afternoon.
