Official: Explosion kills 8 people in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -- A Somali official says that an explosion has killed eight people traveling in a minibus in southwestern Somalia.

Abdullahi Ibrahim Ahmed, an official in the Gedo region, said Wednesday that the explosive went off late Tuesday.

Somali government troops have been fighting Islamist insurgents for months where the bomb exploded. It was not clear if the explosion was caused by an older land mine or a newer roadside bomb planted by insurgents.

Somalia has been mired in violence since 1991.
