Zimbabwe police raid arts festival over play
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) -- Organizers of Zimbabwe's largest arts festival say police raided their offices after a performance depicting an African dictatorship.
Officials said Friday that four organizers were taken by police for questioning Thursday. They were freed and not immediately charged.
The musical play depicted an ailing, elderly leader and an army general being hounded from the stage in a citizen uprising. It also portrayed corruption over diamonds and police locking suspects in cages.
Witnesses said the satire was seen to portray President Robert Mugabe, whose regime has been accused of human rights abuses and looting at the nation's eastern diamond fields. Mugabe, 87, returned Wednesday from his fifth trip to Singapore since December where he has received medical treatment.
