SAfrica: Deal close for striking truckers
JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- South Africa's Road Freight Employers Association says it is close to reaching a settlement with more 20,000 truckers who went on strike last month demanding a 12 percent pay raise.
The RFEA said Friday it has proposed a new wage deal. A spokesman the South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union said a deal is "a possibility."
If signed by the truckers, the agreement would end weeks of a road freight paralysis that once threatened the supply of consumer goods and gas in Africa's biggest economy.
Some trucks have been set on fire and drivers attacked with petrol bombs and rocks, with at least one fatality.
