Greek gov't forcing end to Athens subway strike
ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- The Greek government says it is using a civil mobilization measure to end a public transport strike at the capital's metro system, now in its eighth day.
Strikers protesting pay cuts refused to return to work Thursday despite a court order demanding they do so.
Transport Minister Kostis Hadzidakis announced the government was imposing the civil mobilization measure, under which workers who continue to strike risk being fired.
The workers are protesting against the government's latest package of austerity measures. The austerity was demanded by international creditors in return for bailout funds but has deepened economic hardship in a country that has entered a sixth year of recession.
