Morsi: security measures only temporary
BERLIN (AP) -- Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi says his declaration of a state of emergency for three cities is only temporary and will be lifted "as soon as the situation stabilizes."
Morsi declared a 30-day state of emergency and night curfew in Port Said and two other Canal cities, Suez and Ismailiya, and their surrounding provinces in response to increasing violence there.
Speaking Wednesday after meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Morsi said, "as soon as the situation stabilizes the measures will be revoked."
Morsi won power as Egypt's first freely elected leader seven months ago. He has pushed through an Islamist-backed constitution but hasn't produced a program to salvage a crumbling economy.
