Medvedev calls for transparency in Russian courts

Medvedev calls for transparency in Russian courts

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev says the transparency of the nation's court system must be improved.

Medvedev has told a meeting of judges that public trust in courts remains low and that it's necessary to make it possible for the public to get access to information. Among other reforms, he says court decisions must be posted on the Internet and be easily accessible.

He says judges should also be protected from pressure.

The Tuesday statement is the latest in a series of calls for strengthening the rule of law that Medvedev has made since his election in March. He also has pledged to combat rampant official corruption.
