Alexa Helms joined 7 NEWS in October 2012 as a general assignment reporter.
Alexa comes to Miami after two years at the jointly operated NBC and CBS stations in El Paso, KTSM and KDBC, where she was a weekend anchor and reporter. Her seven-month investigative series on Hispanic students being forced out of a high school in the El Paso Independent School District triggered investigations by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Education.
Alexa also broke stories on crime and corruption along the border, including exclusive interviews detailing prison conditions in Juarez.
A Dallas native and a third-generation journalist, Alexa is a graduate of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma, where she helped initiate the first ever Spanish-language broadcasts of the university's nightly newscast. Fluent in Spanish, Alexa also studied at the Universitat de Barcelona.
