The Coen brothers have directed movies like "The Big Lebowski," "Fargo" and "No Country for Old Men." Their latest one, "Hail, Caesar!" pays tribute to classic Hollywood.
"Hail, Caesar" takes us back to the golden age of Hollywood. George Clooney plays a mega-movie star who gets kidnapped. Josh Brolin is the movie studio head, who has to fix this problem and any problem that’s thrown his way.
Josh Brolin: “Every moment is about problem solving.:
Sometimes solving problems means getting physical.
Chris Van Vliet: "I want to ask you about that Clooney scene because it looks like you’re hitting him really hard."
Josh Brolin: "I am. He’s a method guy which I never thought that he was. Kind of like a Daniel Day Lewis kind of guy. So when he’s on set, he likes a tent, which I never knew. Which is true. You’re smiling, you’re not believing me."
Chris Van Vliet: "I don’t know if you’re being serious."
Josh Brolin: "It’s true. He’s got a tent and he does a lot of pacing and studying in that tent and then it’s like a full method thing. So I slapped the [expletive] out of that guy. I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to. But it was for George."
George Clooney: "Yes, he legitimately slapped me with that big meat paw of his. He got me a few times, but he’s a very gentle slapper."
Chris Van Vliet: "It didn’t look like it."
George Clooney: “Oh yeah yeah yeah.”
The movie takes us through a day in the life of working at a movie studio and pays respect to classic movies. "Hail, Caesar feels a bit like “Ben-Hur,” we run into an Esther Williams-type in a giant swimming pool and Channing Tatum who channels Gene Kelley with his tap dancing skills that he learned from his wife.
Channing Tatum: "She was teaching me and not only teaching me but she’s like, ‘You’re getting to do what?” And I’m like, ‘I’m getting to tap dance,’ and she’s just like steaming on the inside. It’s like what she’s gifted at and I just keep getting them.”
George Clooney: "So all of those close ups of the feet doing it, that’s her?"
Channing Tatum: "That’s actually her. So if I have skinny ankles, I just have skinny ankles."
George Clooney said if he had to do the tap dancing, there would have been a lot of blood. “Hail, Caesar” is in theaters this weekend.
