Tow Trouble Follow-Up

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- There is no doubt the members of the Broward County Commission are well aware of problems within the tow truck industry from demands of cash only and no change provided.

Lois Wexler: "So I have heard too many nightmare stories about that."

To the way business operators behave.

Dale Holness: "And how horrendous it is the treatment that you receive from these places sometime."

The commissioners have unanimously passed changes to the existing law that will help protect the public. In the future, tow companies operating in the county will have to accept debit and credit cards and make change.

The move comes in response to aggressive towing that took place around the Sawgrass Mills Mall last holiday shopping season. A 7 News Investigation showed how hundreds of vehicles were towed on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Brianna Rhue: "I felt really taken for going to the mall to try and save some money around Christmas."

Shoppers had to take cabs and wait in line to get their cars back. This picture was taken at 4:30 a.m.

Brianna Rhue: "It was just a very sad sight."

The City of Sunrise took almost immediate action to require payment options other than just cash for people towed in that city, and now the county has followed suit.

Broward County Mayor John Rodstrom: "At least if you're gonna get towed hopefully you'll know what your rights are gonna be, and hopefully you're gonna be able to get your car back quickly, and you'll be able to pay for getting your car back in a number of ways. And the fee is not more than $100."

Carmel Cafiero: "The county action impacts unincorporated areas of Broward and cities that do not have their own ordinances. So at this point, there is a patchwork of regulations which means your rights will depend on where you are when you're towed."
