Stabbed At The Shelter

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- When you see the stab wounds, it's hard to believe the victim survived.

Angela: "I got up out of my bed, slipping on my blood, on my own blood."

But Angela, who asked we only use her first name, did survive and she is determined that her nightmare never happen to anyone else.

Carmel: "Did you think you were going to die?"

Angela: "Yes, yes, yes."

Angela was at The Lodge, a domestic violence center in Miami-Dade. Angela says there was a personality conflict with her assigned roommate.

Angela: "I hear like a 'bam' and I wake up and she's like, 'Who the expletive, and I'm gonna hurt and kill whoever took my chicken'".

And then came the attack.

Angela: "I woke up, and I felt a horrible pain right on my side. When I look up, I see the knife, and I hear, 'Die' and she stabs me again to my bone."

Angela says she was stabbed nine times with a 10 inch butcher knife from the shelter's kitchen.

Angela: "I said 'Oh my God I'm dying' and I said 'I can't die.' She was going to stab me in my face and I saw the knife in my eye almost and I went like this, and I kicked her all the way across to the back of the room."

Katesha Mckoy was arrested and jailed on attempted murder charges in connection with the attack.

Tobi Perl, Attorney: "It's bad enough to be the victim of abuse one time, but to go back in a place you are supposed to find solace and shelter, and to be a victim again, it's inexcusable."

Angela has filed this lawsuit against The Lodge. It claims "The attack was entirely foreseeable and preventable." And that even Mckoy said to staff "I told you all this was going to happen."

Tobi Perl: "This is a place that's supposed to provide refuge for victims of domestic violence, and instead, when my client begged and pleaded and told them she was in fear for her life, they ignored the begs, they ignored the pleas."

The president of The Lodge turned down our request for comment citing confidentiality laws. But 7 News has obtained a review of the June attack by an organization that monitors shelters for the state. It indicates Mcoy warned a staff member what would happen if Angela was not moved from the room stating "If there's a fatality it would be on your hands."

Carmel Cafiero: "This was a nightmare wasn't it? Do you think you'll ever get over it?"

Angela: "I'm never going to forget it."
