Broward official's son arrested in pill mill raid

Posted: Updated:

It was a big surprise for everybody inside the Delray Pain Management Clinic Wednesday.

Armed agents from the DEA task force closed it up and hauled everybody inside outside. Among them, 49-year-old Dr. Zvi Harrey Perper, the son of Broward County's medical examiner.

Carmel Cafiero: "Authorities say Dr. Perper is 22nd on the list of doctors prescribing oxycodone nationwide."

He was arrested and charged with racketeering and trafficking in oxycodone-- charges that carry a possible penalty of 490 years in prison.

Carmel Cafiero: "What do you think your father's going to say?"

Dr. Perper: "I don't know."

Carmel Cafiero: "Do you think he's gonna be be humiliated?"

Dr. Perper: "No."

Carmel Cafiero: "No, why not?"

Dr. Perper: "Because I've never done anything to be humiliated."

Broward Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Perper did not want to discuss his son's arrest.

The task force also hit Commercial Medical Group's Clinic off Commercial Boulevard. It is considered one the biggest in Broward County. Neighbors and officials were delighted by the raid.

Anne Salle, Oakland Park Commissioner: "This is a great sight. It's one of the problem businesses in our city."

Vincent Colangelo has been indicted in connection with activities at this clinic and others.

Mark Trouville, Drug Enforcement Administration: "This man was bringing in, we estimate, $150,000 a day. I don't know where else you can go for a higher profit margin than that. It was all about the money. It always is about the money with these folks."

Colangelo is a convicted felon with a long history of arrests in Broward County.

Carmel Cafiero: "Mr. Colangelo, can you wait a minute? Channel 7, we have some questions for you."

He wasn't talking to me last month, but he may be talking to authorities soon. He's been charged with money laundering in connection with seven pain management clinics and a pharmacy. He's been a frequent sight on South Florida streets, driving a collection of pricey cars.

But Colangelo may need a new ride. Authorities seized a warehouse full of his cars that range from muscle cars to Lamborghini and from a Rolls Royce to a monster truck and everything in between. One agent said they were having a hard time figuring out just how much all these vehicles are worth.
