Double Duty

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Alyson Benison never buys silver cleaner.

Alyson Benison: "I haven't bought it in years."

She lines a bowl with tinfoil and adds water, dish soap or laundry detergent, and lets her silver soak for about 20 minutes.

Alyson Benison: "It works great. I think it's like a chemical reaction between the foil and the dish detergent but it works great."

Her silver sparkles and so do her floors. Vinegar and water does the trick.

Alyson Benison: "Not only save money but I like that I'm not using chemicals in the house. I buy one thing it's multi-purpose."

Jodi Furman of Live FabuLESS says it's all about dollars and common sense.

Jodi Furman: "The great thing about having things do double-duty it's not only going to save you money, it saves you time and also storage space."

In Jodi's house, vinegar

and water goes a long way. It works to clean glass and mirrors and also as a fabric softener.

Jodi Furman: "I only need to buy one item once instead of 16 different bottles of different things."

Lots of things can do double duty in your house.

The acid in ketchup gives brass a brand-new shine, baking soda cleans teeth and counter tops, coffee grounds take away refrigerator odors, aluminum foil keeps your laundry static-free, and grocery bags make great packing materials.

Jodi Furman: "Instead of using styrofoam peanuts or bubble wrap, you can take and wrap around plastic to keep it safe."

Then, there's cinnamon. It isn't just for eating it also keeps ants away.

Rubbing alcohol is a great stain remover, WD-40 shines stainless steel, and fingernail polish remover takes away scuff marks on your shoes.

Alyson Benison: "I buy one thing, it's multi purpose."

Finding ways to make things do double duty to save you time and money.
