Keep Pool Costs Down

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Frank Carmona loves a pristine pool.

Frank Carmona: "With this fine mesh I'm catching all the little stuff."

He takes good care of his own pool and helps others do the same at All Florida Pool and Spa.

Pool owners can save $1,000 or more a year just by doing it themselves.

Frank Carmona: "All you really need is 10 minutes a week to maintain your pool."

Frank says faithful weekly maintenance is the key to keeping costs down.

Frank Carmona: "You're going to test your water, you're going to add the minerals and chemicals necessary to keep it in balance. You're going to clean your baskets. You're going to clean your pool, take all the leaves out of it and that's it. It's really kind of simple."

Balancing water chemistry helps keep it clean and bacteria free, so weekly testing is important but you don't have to do it at home.

"I don't really know what I'm doing so could you walk me through it?"

Just bring in a water sample, most any pool company will test it at no charge.

Frank Carmona: "We'll tell you what you need to do and how to maintain it, and we have the equipment to show you how to use it to maintain your pool."

Always make sure your pool equipment is clean and in good working order. That means keeping debris out of the skimmer and pump baskets.

Frank Carmona: "If this fills up all the way it will prevent flow of water going to the pump and it will eventually damage the pump."

Keep the filter clean by taking it out and hosing it down at least once a month.

And you can save money on your monthly electric bill by switching to new energy efficient pumps.

Frank Carmona: "I switched out my pool pump, I'm saving $65 a month."

A little attention every week to keep your pool ready year round.

Frank Carmona: "It's just maintenance. You've got to take care of your pool and it's really not that hard to do just get out there and do it."

If you do prefer to have a pool service take care of your maintenance, fees generally start at about $85 a month, depending on the size and location of the pool.
