WSVN -- Dawn jones and her family practice water conservation every day.

Dawn Jones: "We all brush our teeth with the water off, and when I shave my legs in the shower I turn the water off and then turn it back on to rinse off."

Dawn has also made the switch to energy efficient appliances.

Dawn Jones: "The washer it only uses like three point three gallons a load so I know that saves a lot when you're doing laundry."

Her family also installed low-flow showerheads and making those simple changes can help you save big.

Jennifer Messemer: "Every little bit adds up. The less water you use, the less water you're going to be charged for on your water bill."

The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department says a low flow shower head will save 2,300 gallons of water and about $14 a year. Low-flow toilets save $1,800 gallons of water and $110 a year.

And buying an energy efficient dishwasher saves 5,000 gallons of water per year and $40 in utility costs.

Another good tip to save big: Make sure you have no leaks.

Jennifer Messemer: "A leak the size of a pencil eraser over the course of three months can waste almost as much as almost 1.2 million gallons of water."

Outside you can collect rain water in a barrel to water the grass. It's all about going green to save you green.

Dawn Jones: "It's a very good effort and very easy to do I think."

Lynn Martinez: "Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department is giving away high efficiency showerheads. Just bring in your old one and they'll exchange it. If you have story ideas for Money Monday, email us at
