Holiday Safety

WSVN -- Pablo Fumero looks forward to getting out his holiday decorations every year.

Pablo Fumero: "I love the old look, the old style of Christmas you know. I try to make it a little brighter inside the house and outside the house also."

When it comes to holiday lights Pablo plays it safe.

Pablo Fumero: "I make sure that all the plugs are in tact and all the things that get plugged into the wall don't get overdone and things like that.

Whether you're re-using old lights or adding new ones, Florida Power and Light says check everything carefully.

Marie Bertot: "Make sure that they're intact, don't use any exposed wiring so if your Christmas lights are broken, if there is a wire out don't use those lights, discard those lights immediately."

FPL l also says never use indoor lights outside or outdoor lights inside. Make sure extension cords and other lights have ELT or UL tags to show they were tested for safety. If you're buying new lights, IED is the way to go.

Marie Bertot: "They use 98 percent less energy than tradional lights, they burn cooler and they're able to use plastic instead of glass so it's more durable."

Led lights also save money in the long run.

Pablo Fumero: "You immediately notice the difference and that's always a good thing to have in your pocket, same light, less money."

Before climbing ladders to put lights on your house, look up check for overhead power lines. And when you're decorating, never put more than three strands of lights per outlet, and use a surge protector to keep from overloading. Also, put lights on timers to conserve energy.

Marie Bertot: "Nowadays there are all sorts of programable controls and there's even remote control type of timers."

Pablo loves getting out his trains and homemade ornament and knowing he's following manufacturers instructions, he feels confident about his holiday lights and decorations.

Pablo Fumero: "We follow the correct proceedure to make sure the whole family is safe."

Also, never put power cords under rugs and keep them away from high traffic areas.
