Thanksgiving Meal for Less

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Julie Benlolo is having 13 guest over for Thanksgiving dinner.

Julie Benlolo: "We're on a shoestring budget this year. You know times are tough for us and it's really keeping the meal down to the most efficient price as possible."

So today, Julie is shopping with friend Jodi Furman. Jodi's website Live Fabuless is all about getting more for the very best price, and Thanksgiving is no exception.

Jodi Furman: "You can make a wonderful Thanksgiving feast for a lot less than you think with just a little bit of planning and preparation."

Jodi says now is the time to stalk that turkey.

Jodi Furman: "Starting right now and as we get closer to Thanksgiving is really the best time to buy a turkey. You're going to find fantastic sales on turkey some as low as 39 or even 19 cents a pound."

Jodi says be smart when shopping for your side dishes. Make your grocery list and stick to it. Avoiding impulse buys, clip those coupons and let the sales dictate your menu.

Jodi Furman: "I need a green and because there's a lot obviously to choose from here. I think that's the one I'm going to go with mainly because it's on sale."

Always buy produce that's in season for the best price. And remember, veggies that are not pre-cut are less expensive. Another cost-cutter is making dressing from scratch by saving your old bread.

Jodi Furman: "Cut it up, with a little bit of broth and vegetables that you're probably already using for other dishes. You can go ahead and make a fresh stuffing for less that will taste better and will be more authentic, and a lot more traditional than buying something out of a box."

But when it comes to dessert, the opposite is true. Buying a pre made pie is often less expensive than buying the ingredients you'll need to make one. And finally, if you have a big group coming like Julie does, pot luck will save you money and time in the kitchen.

Julie Benlolo: "One of the things I do is I ask a lot of my family. I have everybody bring a dish and I make a menu and I have them commit to bringing something so that helps my cost my personal cost if everybody shares the pain."

Lynn Martinez: "If you're buying a kosher turkey do it now because those prices will go up the closer Thanksgiving gets. And if you have story ideas for Money Monday, email us at
