Warehouse Savings

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- For savvy warehouse club shoppers like Debbie Lorenz, saving money is a monthly mission.

Debbie Lorenz: "I'd say I save about $100 a month."

No doubt warehouse clubs offer great deals on everything from gas to eyeglasses, and these days organic foods as well.

Debbie Lorenz: "Most wholesale clubs have prices that are up to 30 percent less than supermarkets every day."

To make sure she gets the most for her money, Debbie always uses coupons.

Debbie Lorenz: "I do my coupon shopping first looking for my coupons and then I go from there."

All warehouse clubs offer store coupons. At BJs she can double up using the store coupons and multiple manufacturer's on the same item.

Lini Bobrick: "If there's four items in one package and the package can be split apart, and each item has an individual upc code on it. If you had four coupons for let's say 35 cents off of the Clorox wipes, you could use all four of those coupons off of those four items in that package."

With her $3 store coupon, that's $4.40 in savings. By buying in bulk you can save money on the things you use the most.

Frank Fernandez: "If you really want to stretch your dollar, the bulk is the way to go. I will buy three pounds of ground turkey then I will take it home and divide it into one pound bags so that when I feed my family it lasts a lot longer."

But bigger doesn't always mean better. Smart shoppers always research local supermarket prices and sales, and compare before hitting the warehouse to make sure they're really getting the best price.

Lini Bobrick: "Savvy shoppers know how much they pay for a gallon of milk. They know how much they pay for a pound of chicken, so come in and do a little comparison shopping for yourself."

But you've got to resist those impulse buys. Keep in mind warehouse stores charge membership fees. If you're going to be a member, make sure you shop enough to make it worth your while for Frank that one is a no-brainer.

Frank Fernandez: "The cost of the fee and the savings it just pays for itself."

Lynn Martinez: "Warehouse clubs also offer travel deals, prescriptions and insurance. And right now, BJs is offering a free 60 day trial membership pass."
