Make It Last

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Leanette Fernandez is a savings blogger who knows how to make things last.

Leanette Fernandez: "I flip over bottles like BBQ, ketchup, shampoo and conditioner. I try to get every drop out of the bottles."

Cathy Moghari also knows how to make things last starting with hand soap.

Cathy Moghari: "For the little pump next to the kitchen sink, we generally dilute that a little bit. We find it goes further. Generally those soaps are so concentrated that it really doesn't make a difference."

For consumers, saving money is all about making what you have last as long as possible.

Leanette Fernandez: "I would much rather spend my money on clothes or eating out, than to spend it on replacing toothpaste or condiments."

And there are ways to save all over your house: In the laundry hand wash and hang dry. Saves energy and makes clothes last longer turn pants and shirts inside out to keep the color from fading and the material from stressing.

Leanette Fernandez: With dryer sheets, if you cut them in half you're going to get two uses out of it."

And dryer sheets can also be used as dust rags. In the kitchen, store your milk and eggs toward to the back of the fridge they'll stay colder and fresher longer, and that's not all...

Leanette Fernandez: "If my batteries are out of juice I'll stick them in the freezer, that gives them a little bit more life."

Candles get new life there as well.

Cathy Moghari: "If you freeze your candles at least 24 hours before you use them, they'll actually burn slower and more evenly."

In the bathroom, keep your razors from rusting by drying them when you're done. Make bar soap last longer by opening and setting it in open air for a month. Tey get harder and last longer, and if you use gel soap just a dab on a loofah makes it go a lot further.

Leanette Fernandez: "A little dab will do ya."

That goes for toothpaste too then there's almost gone lipstick:

Leanette Fernandez: "People don't realize how much lipstick is still left once it's flat- there's about half an inch of an inch of lipstick still there."

Use a lipstick brush or a q-tip for dozens more applications. It's all about being aware of what you can do to make things last.

Leanette Fernandez: "I love saving money any way I can and if I can get more out of it I'm happy to do it."

Lynn Martinez: "Here's another tip: When they get low, adding a couple of cap fulls of water to shampoo and conditioner will get you several more uses."
