Pet Sitters

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Kirsten Vetter has been a professional pet sitter since 2005.

Kirsten Vetter, Pet Sitter: "Every day I get to wake up and do something I want to do."

She follows strict guidelines set by the company she works for: The Official Dog Walkers and Pet Sitters.

Kirsten Vetter: "I'm asking for Sassy's veterinarian information."

When it comes to taking care of people's pets it's all about being prepared.

Kirsten Vetter: "Everybody in the Official Dog Walkers, we're very stringent in that we're all licensed, bonded and insured."

That insurance takes care of pets and pet sitters in case of accident or emergency.

Kirsten Vetter: "If a dog walker's walking a dog and the dog does get away that's why we have insurance. I'm also covered under my own insurance to get medical attention.

It also gives owners peace of mind.

Dr. Barry Schugar, Pet Owner: "If I'm hiring somebody I'd like to make sure that they're insured and bonded, it gives you a better level of confidence."

Experts say whenever you hire a pet sitter you should leave detailed instructions for the pet's care in writing that includes your vet's information. Stay in touch with your pet sitter while you're away and when you go out of town leave a credit card number with your vet to pay for medical emergencies.

Dr. John Yao, Veterinarian: "Usually they can call in a credit card or we know them for a while, so we just kind of trust them and they'll come back and pay whenever they come back from their trip."

And if your pet is sick, don't leave it with a sitter.

John Yao: "That animal should be hospitalized and monitored every day."

The Schugars did their homework. They say Sassy and Bam Bam are in good hands when they go away.

Marsha Schugar, Pet Owner: "Our animals are like members of our family and I need to have somebody special because they're very special to us."

You should also give your pet sitter instructions on what would happen to your pet if something happened to you on a trip or if there's a hurricane while you're out of town.
