WSVN -- Vernon Bailey, Career Counselor: "You don't put your education here. You put it on the second page."

Career Counselor Vernon Bailey is helping Brenda Verney sharpen up her resume.

Vernon Bailey: "You see, there's not enough information."

Brenda is looking for a secretary job and is hoping for help from WorkForce One Employment Solutions.

Kelly Allen, WorkForce One: "We have workshops on creating resumes, we have workshops on interviewing skills. If you haven't been interviewed in a while, it's probably a good idea to brush up on that."

Vernon says the most important first step is a killer resume.

Vernon Bailey: "The resume is the ticket to get to that interview, but once you get to that interview, it's your responsibility now to sell the product. What's the product? You."

Selling yourself to a potential employer means targeting each resume to a particular company. Be proactive: try to meet potential employers face-to-face. Don't just rely on e-mails or phone calls.

Once you get the interview, do your research and ask informed questions about the company.

Make sure you tell them why you should get the job.

Vernon Bailey: "If you don't beat your own drum, no one else is going to beat it for you."

Also, clean up your Facebook and other online sites, because potential employers could check up on you.

Vernon Bailey: "If you have something there that's colorful, it might prevent you from getting that position."

Brenda says thanks to the help from WorkForce One, she's ready to go for it.

Brenda Verney: "I feel so happy now, because I feel that I can do it."

Lynn Martinez: "Another tip: leave your cell phone in the car so there won't be any embarrassing interruptions during an interview."
