Graffiti Tour

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Back in the day, graffiti was just a spray and run-away kind of job. Now it's being celebrated as real art in Miami's Wynwood Art District.

Marcos Valella, tour guide: "Miami, to begin with, is a very colorful city, so I think this is a great addition that you have these colorful walls just appearing."

There's a unique new way to see all the murals and spray-painted walls! Hop on one of Roam Rides' Vespas from South Beach and go on a tour to explore the mainland's street art scene.

Kit Sullivan, owner, Roam Rides: "We're crossing the bridge, and we're trying to get other people to cross the bridge with us."

Your ride starts at Purdy Avenue, where you'll cruise across the scenic Venetian Causeway.

Kevin Duda: "Just being on a scooter in Miami is a reason enough to take a tour, the weather is beautiful, you never get sick of riding along the water."

Fifteen minutes later, you'll end up in Wynwood to get an education on all the neighborhood graffiti.

Most of the wall art is legal, done by local and internationally-known artists.

Marcos Valella: "It transitions from really elaborate murals to like more underground street art to conceptual art to high contemporary art."

Some of the graffiti is locked up behind gates, on private property, but on this tour, they've got the keys to give you all access.

You'll learn about the artists and crews and what their graffiti means.

Marcos Valella: "There's four to five stops where we get off the scooters and we talk about the work, and we walk around, and you can take pictures."

Since there's so much art to see, you'll also do some quick drive-bys on the scooters where your guide will give you some quick info.

Kevin Duda: "I think my favorite part was getting to know the local artists and being able to identify who did which work, and that ups my street cred. My favorite is Welcome To Miami with the American flag and the chameleon."

The tour finishes up with brunch at a Wynwood favorite: Morgan's restaurant. All that scooting around can make you hungry!

It's $65 for the tour and brunch. Roam Rides also offers two other Vespa tours: A Wynwood gallery tour or an in-depth visit to one of the major collection houses.
