Autism Center

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- When baby Ali was born everything seemed perfect, but when she was just over a year old something changed.

Carol Perez-Soto: "She was more absent. She started not to pay attention. She started not replying when we called her."

Her mom says she was like a different child.

Carol Perez-Soto: "Someone turned a switch off, that's what happened."

When Ali was diagnosed with autism, her mom went into action.

Carol Perez-Soto: "You are the parent, you were put in that situation for a reason, you have to act and do what's best for your child."

She found the Ann Storck Center, a school for children with developmental delays.

Nicki Thompson: "In my classroom right now we have cerebral palsy, down syndrome and autism."

Nicki Thompson is an exceptional education teacher. She says one of the biggest issues for autistic kids like ali is trouble communicating.

"Especially, when she did not get what she wanted or is not able to communicate something, Ali would scream."

That's why the center uses the star curriculum. It's based on years of autism research they focus is on expressive language following routines and improving social skills and behavior.

"You sit at a table one on one with them and and you repeat things over and over, like if you want them to say their name, what's your name? They answer you give them a treat."

Now Ali is four, she knows her numbers, her shapes and her letters. Plus mom says she is much more outgoing.

"She never played with other kids other than her brother, now she's more friendly with the other kids."

Ali has come a long way over the past few years. Her mom credits the center for helping to turn that switch back on.

"How my child from being absent is now here again and she's happy, and she's affectionate and she's smart."

Lynn Martinez: "The Ann Storck Center is for kids up to five years of age."
