Learning Languages

WSVN -- Did we stumble upon a class in France or Spain? Believe it or not, this is happening in our own backyard at the International Studies Preparatory Academy or ISPA for short.

Alejandro Perez: "All of the students participate in one of three languages, language academics, either the Spanish, French or Italian."

The magnet language program is the only one of its kind in the U.S. Students who enroll must pass a language proficiency test so this is not for beginners.

Alejandro Perez: "It's really an advanced language program where students participating at ISPA will be truly proficient after 4 years of instruction."

Here's how the curriculum works: Students take their core classes like math, science and social studies in English, then they dedicate three hours a day to literature and humanities in their language of choice.

Alejandro Perez: "All of the textbooks either come from Italy, France or Spain."

So it's just like taking the class in the country of origin. Leonardo only spoke Italian when he moved here four years ago.

Leonardo Viola: "I am from Naples in Italy, which is a city from the South."

Now he's fluent in English and Italian. He says the mix of students made him feel comfortable.

Leonardo Viola: "There's a lot of people with different cultures, that come from different places just like me."

Aviselle is from Miami but her parents are from Cuba. She grew up speaking Spanish she says the school offers students a greater perspective.

Aviselle Diaz: "It teaches you so much more about the world, that it would allow me to have a more open point of view, expand my horizons."

Noura was born in Syria and speaks three languages

Noura Maziak: "English, Arabic and French."

She says this type of education will help in her career path.

Noura Maziak: "If you want a future in international business or international law, I think it's the greatest thing to know more than English."

Lynn Martinez: "Most of the students we spoke with agree being fluent in more than one language will open many doors for them."
