Hands 2 Help

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- These girls may look like they're in class but they're not just learning about science and math.

"It's going to give you a smooth, even tone."

They're learning how to be young ladies thanks to Camille Jones she started the non-profit organization called Hands to Help. Then created it's core program passage to womanhood.

Camille Jones: "That program is a mentorship program for young ladies between the ages of 8 to 18."

Girls from all types of backgrounds meet four times a week after school.

Camille Jones: "95 percent of our girls are at risk or need some type of mentorship in their lives."

Camille focuses on their education but also teaches them good hygiene. To how to apply makeup properly, the girls also express themselves through dance something that helped boring 17-year old Evonne out of her shell.

Evonne Mitchell: "It brought me out of my shyness because at first I was so shy I didn't want to do anything, now I'm not shy anymore."

Camille is like a mom to them.

Camille Jones: "Once they come into the program the first thing I do is hug and kiss my girls because that just forms a special bond."

And because of that bond they open up to her.

Katura Leach: "I like the fact that Miss Camille was like a second mother to me, and I could talk to her about anything that I couldn't talk to my real mother about."

12-year-old Alesha is being raised by her grandmother who felt it was critical for her to be in a program like this.

Winifred Johnson: "I want her to be a young, responsible adult that can make decisions for herself."

At the end of each meeting, they form a circle and repeat their mantra committed to being the beautiful, intelligent and productive young ladies they are.

Lynn Martinez: "Camille also takes them on field trips and college tours."
