Fatherhood Task Force

Posted: Updated:

WSVN -- Rolando and Jeannette are about to become parents and Rolando admits he's a bit nervous.

Rolando Barreuco: "I was kinda scared at first but it was something cool to look forward to."

He had concerns about the pregnancy and about becoming a father.

Rolando Barreuco: "I wanted to know if there was any help out there for me, so that I could be prepared when the child came into this world."

But he found out there just wasn't much out there.

Rolando Barreuco: "I couldn't find too many things for males it was mostly teaching classes for females."

That's why Holly Zwerling helped create the Fatherhood Task Force of South Florida.

Holly Zwerling: "We're seeing a lot of families without a father present, and the numbers seem to be increasing."

Holly says dad's can feel distanced from their new family.

Holly Zwerling: "If we don't involve fathers from the beginning, we're sort of pushing them aside and saying they're not as important."

When fathers are involved from the beginning we see higher birth weights, healthier pregnancies. Fathers take better care of themselves and that influences mom's health as well.

Holly Zwerling: "So in a sense they're really beginning to share pregnancy and share all the responsibilities."

It also promotes happier relationships. Rolando found the fatherhood task force and is going to take part in their training workshop. He's already feeling more confident about becoming a dad.

Rolando Barreuco: "It's very important to me basically because I want to be a good father, I want to provide the best kind of care for my child."

Lynn Martinez: "The Fatherhood Task Force meets once a month and gives new dads a chance to talk about what it means to be a father."
